Put the mattress on the floor?

Can I put my mattress on the floor?

Can I put my mattress on the floorYou have just moved in and your bed has not yet been delivered? Or do you simply have a preference for minimalist style and therefore do without a bulky bed frame? Whether for financial or visual reasons: Many people prefer to place their mattress directly on the floor instead of using a slatted frame or bedstead. But is that really advisable?

What’s wrong with sleeping with the mattress on the floor?

Most bed sellers agree: mattresses that lie on the floor lead to back pain and increase the risk of moisture and mould growth. After all, without a slatted frame and bedstead, the mattress lacks the necessary air supply, allowing moisture to accumulate on the underside of the mattress. The hard bedroom floor cannot replace the ergonomic effect of the slatted frame either. Nevertheless, we believe that with the right mattress and a few valuable tips, you don’t have to give up your minimalist sleeping space.

Laying the mattress on the floor – What you should bear in mind

A bedding on the floor looks particularly inviting. However, if it leads to mould growth and back pain, the cosy sleeping place soon turns into an unhealthy and damp night’s lodging. Here are 5 tips on how to sleep well on a mattress on the floor.

1. Make sure your sleeping environment is dry! If you ventilate regularly and ensure that moisture can escape from your mattress, mould should not grow. Cold air can absorb less moisture than warm air. Regular airing is therefore particularly important in winter. To give your mattress more room to dry, it is also advisable to fold your bedding far back in the morning and to do without bedspreads.

2. Choosing the right mattress is crucial! Not every mattress is suitable for sleeping on the floor. It is best to use a cold foam mattress. Compared to Visco and latex mattresses, these are lighter and more open-pored. They allow more air circulation and are therefore particularly suitable for use on the floor. In general, the mattress should also be of high quality and somewhat thicker so that it can compensate for the hardness of the floor. 3.

3. Put the mattress up regularly! To prevent mould from growing under your mattress, you should put your mattress upright against the wall from time to time. You can also use this opportunity to clean the floor under your mattress. It is even advisable to turn the mattress over completely every 3-4 months. Be sure to pay attention to the distribution of the zones of your mattress.

4. Mattress pads provide ventilation! Placing a pad under your mattress creates an air space that allows moisture on the floor to escape. This helps your mattress dry faster and prevents mould from forming. The Matnext Airflow mattress pad is particularly breathable and allows warm air to circulate through the 95% open fabric.

When you should rather do without a mattress on the floor

If you follow the tips mentioned above, there is actually nothing to stop you from placing the mattress directly on the floor. Under some circumstances, however, you should reconsider your bedding close to the floor. For example, if you heat your home with underfloor heating, heat can build up under the mattress. This attacks the materials and reduces the lifespan of your sleeping pad. Also, if you are prone to house dust or pollen allergies, doing without a slatted frame and bedstead is not a good idea. Especially on smooth floors like laminate, tiles, vinyl or parquet, the dust collects and can lead to allergic reactions.
